White Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church has a rich history. We’ve been a fixture in DeAnn, Arkansas, for over a century. The church was organized in 1848, almost twenty years before the Civil War. The name Deann comes from a well-known geographic oddity in Southwest Arkansas, the Prarie D’Ane – A 20-mile square prairie surrounded on all sides by dense forest. This unusual prairie was a strategic objective during the Civil War. It was a crossroads leading west to the Capitol of Arkansas at the time, Washington, South to Shreveport, and East to the heavily fortified town of Camden, Arkansas. Ultimately, a battle ensued, and Union forces were forced to retreat North to Little Rock, pursued by the Confederates. And from there, people began to gather in the community of Deann. Each year during our church homecoming, our historian will deliver a presentation highlighting Deann and the church’s history.
